Precise, safe and efficient control at Battersea Power Station
Brief
To assist with a major commercial and residential redevelopment of the Battersea Power Station building, BGES were brought in to deliver an adaptable smoke ventilation and pollution clearance package for the basement levels, which would accommodate significant changes in building use.
Background
London’s iconic Battersea Power Station is being brought back to life through a major redevelopment. The Grade II* listed site will house over 200 apartments, offices, over 100 shops, restaurants and cafes, as well as unique events.
This historic landmark is cavernous inside, with multiple sub-level basements for vehicle parking and deliveries. Car park ventilation specialists Delta Ventilation called on BGES Group to help them deliver a full smoke ventilation and pollution clearance package within these areas. The system had to be designed to be adaptable to the changes in environment and use, as well as take into account the enormous distances between the panels.

Underground spaces require complex mechanical systems to ensure they are safe, well-ventilated and meet the requirements of UK building regulations. Battersea’s cavernous network of car parking spaces was no exception.
We have experience working in challenging sub-basement environments, and the expertise to deliver projects over vast distances. The brief also called for an open protocol solution (Bacnet), which is our speciality
Our solution needed to deliver both on safety and efficiency. We used Delta Controls open Bacnet controllers for the environmental controls of the space, based on CO2 and temperature requirements, and interfaced with the numerous fan systems, also via open protocol Bacnet. We optimised the fans and controls to offer the best savings possible: they are available and run when required for environmental and fire safety, but stood down for energy efficiency when not.
Naturally for a vast site under construction, the project was “stop start”: as areas became available, we installed and commissioned individual systems. The end result is a complete network of safe, compliant environmental controls systems. We’ve also ensured clear visibility for the estates team via a user-friendly front end: this will help with ongoing maintenance needs. The system is as energy efficient as possible to deliver carbon and cost savings.
It has been great to work at such an iconic premise and certainly exciting to participate in the regeneration of a Grade-II listed building. The support we have received from BGES Group has been great, as the extent and complexity of the project required a very thoughtful design and many modifications during the installation and commissioning period.
